Christmas Orchestration

Just a new project which has been thrown at me – orchestrating a christmas musical from a piano&choir score, into a full orchestral score for:

Piccolo
2 Flutes
3 Oboes
Cor Anglais
2 Clarinets
Bass Clarinet
2 Bassoons
4 French Horns
3 Trumpets
2 Trombones
Bass Trombone
Tuba

Various percussion including Timpani, Snare Drum, Triangle, Gong, Cymbals, Tubular Bells, Glockenspiel, Harp, Piano

Choir
Violins, Violas, Cellos, Double Basses

When I first started scoring it looked like lots of parts to write, but it’s not too bad.

So far I have done about one and a half weeks of work, 82 A3-size pages of orchestration, about half and hours worth of music. Still a couple more to go.

In addition to scoring, I also have to come out with a decent “computer” performance of the entire thing – a minus one backing orchestral track for the real choir. Hopefully it doesn’t end up sounding too fake!

I find my scoring pretty boring, though – especially the string, woodwind and brass sections. Hmm, that covers pretty much everthing. Everything’s boring!

Just two pages of the 82 I have at the moment –
